Democratic CNN analyst Kirsten Powers defended President Trump early Wednesday morning when CNN host Don Lemon mocked his address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night.
Lemon mocked Trump's speech, saying it sounded like a college student trying to use big words had written it. The CNN host described the address as a "[Richard] Nixon versus [John F.] Kennedy television moment tonight because ... if you listen the speech, it sounds much different than if you're looking at it on the television."
Lemon then pointed out that both former Presidents Obama and George W. Bush spoke in the same manner that they gave speeches. He noted that Trump's speech sounded "presidential" but said he did not think it matched with Trump's voice.
"It sounds like a speech that was written for someone that he was reciting, and there were some big words and phrases that I don't think that he actually connected to if you just listened to the speech," Lemon said.
Powers did not agree with Lemon's comments and pushed back against his assessment.
"I've interviewed him a couple of times and that's what it reminded me of. This is exactly what he was like," Powers said.
"He's charming in person–" Lemon responded.
Powers agreed and went on to say his voice was very familiar and that he was calm during the speech like he was during her multiple interviews with him.
"So, to me, it wasn't a completely foreign person," Powers said.
