Continetti: ‘The Only Thing That Will Stop Donald Trump Is if He Loses the Election’

September 29, 2016

Washington Free Beacon editor in chief Matthew Continetti  told MSNBC’s Chuck Todd on Wednesday that even after Donald Trump’s multiple campaign blunders, the only thing that will actually stop him is if he loses the election.

Todd asked Continetti why it seems so hard for Trump to apologize, even after he insults individuals or groups.

"I find it amazing as well," Continetti said. "I think most of America and the world does. That’s who he is, and he’s never done it. He never will do it."

He said that the framing of his campaign has also worked in his favor.

"And so, I do think, though, he framed the context of this pretty well for his purposes," Continetti said. "When he said, ‘She is the insider, I’m the outsider. I am the change agent. She is the status quo.’"

He explained that this framing has enabled voters who may not be paying attention to the election the ability to understand this simple message of change in a time when most Americans are upset with Washington, D.C.

"And for most of American voters who may not be paying attention much to the media debate or political debate, they hear that message and they may think, ‘You know, he is right, and I want to change Washington so much, so badly, that I’m going to take the chance with Donald J. Trump,’" Continetti said.

Todd also asked about recent reports depicting Trump’s staff as being unhappy with him after the first presidential debate.

"You know, Matthew, it does appear that obviously there is something going on here about managing the candidate, because when you have folks blindly saying this to the New York Times, ‘Well, he had an overstepped schedule, too many people were in his ear, and there was no game plan,’" Todd said. "Well, I’m guessing there were people who wanted to do that and he himself refused it."

Continetti said this is where the "Trump will be Trump" pattern has emerged, once again, in his campaign.

"He’s remained the same person throughout the campaign to this point, and he was himself for better or for worse, according to some of these polls we’re seeing, on Monday night," he said. "Is he going to prepare some more? Maybe."

He said he believes this tactic is the reason his supporters like him.

"His supporters, they like that," Continetti said. "So, he didn’t do anything to alienate his supporters. He may have done quite a bit to alienate some people who were on the fence."

"The only thing that will stop Donald Trump is if he loses the election," he said.
