A top aide to Hillary Clinton warned about "pay-to-play" stories that could emerge if reporters looked for overlap between all of the companies that paid Clinton six-figure sums for speeches and potential donations they provided to the Clinton Foundation, according to emails released by WikiLeaks.
A Washington Free Beacon review of the organizations that paid Clinton for speeches found that they gave at least $8 million, combined, to the Clinton Foundation.
Brian Fallon, Hillary Clinton's national press secretary, sent the email to other top campaign aides in July 2015. The message dealt with the release of Clinton health records and tax forms. Fallon mapped out a detailed rollout plan for the records and tried to anticipate critical stories that could be written about them.
Fallon stated that the overlap of organizations that had paid Clinton for speeches and donated to the Clinton Foundation could "fuel pay-to-play storylines."
"Reporters will also scrutinize the 2013 speech list for overlap between speech hosts and campaign/Foundation donors that could fuel 'pay-to-play' storylines," Fallon wrote in the email.
It does not appear that any stories were published on this topic following the Clinton campaign's release of the documents.
Hillary delivered more than 90 speeches after stepping down as secretary of state in early 2013. The lucrative gigs were each worth between $100,000 and $400,000, netting Clinton nearly $22 million.
Many of the companies that booked Clinton for speeches also donated generously to the Clinton Foundation. The foundation, which discloses its donors but only specifies how much they donated within wide bands, received between $8 million and $26 million in donations from speech hosts, the Free Beacon has found.
The Associated Press reported in April that more than one-third of the companies that paid Clinton to speak had contracts with the U.S. government.
