A CNN chyron declared Tuesday that the special House election in Georgia's sixth congressional district would be the first real test of Donald Trump's presidency, despite a pro-Trump candidate winning a contested special election just a week earlier.
"Georgia Election: First Real Verdict of Trump Presidency?" read the banner during a CNN segment on the closely-watched race between Democrat Jon Ossoff and a host of Republican candidates.
But only a week earlier, Republicans played defense in another competitive special election. Pro-Trump Republican Ron Estes was elected with 52 percent of the vote in Kansas' fourth District, replacing former representative and current CIA chief Mike Pompeo.
Other outlets saw the Kansas election as a "test" of Trump that he had won.
"Republican Wins Kansas Election Seen as Trump Test," reported NBC, calling the election "a referendum on President Donald Trump."
Even the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee played up the results of the election, insisting that the closer-than-expected win in a red district "should set off alarm bells for House Republicans."
It remains unclear why the first House race was not a "real" verdict on the Trump presidency, or if the Georgia election will be a "real" verdict if the Republicans happen to win again.
