Hillary Clinton told supporters Monday at a campaign rally in Ohio that there was "no case here" while discussing the FBI reopening its investigation into her private email server on Friday.
Clinton first explained how confused she was that the probe was reopened in the first place.
"But let me start with this," she said. "I'm sure a lot of you may be asking what this new email story is about and why in the world the FBI would decide to jump into an election with no evidence of any wrongdoing with just days to go."
The crowd booed. Clinton nodded.
"That's a good question," Clinton said as she laughed.
She then apologized and said she understood that using a personal email server while serving as secretary of state was not her best idea.
"And first of all, for those of you who are concerned about my using personal email, I understand, and as I've said I'm not making excuses," she said. "I've said it was a mistake and I regret it."
Clinton said now the FBI wants to look at the emails of her top aide, Huma Abedin, which the bureau should "by all means" do.
"And now they apparently want to look at emails of one of my staffers, and by all means, they should look at them, and I am sure they will reach the same conclusion they did when they looked at my emails for the last year," Clinton said. "There is no case here."
The crowd roared.
The news of the FBI reopening Clinton's email investigation came 11 days out from the election. Director James Comey sent a letter to Congress saying that agents found emails that may be "pertinent" to the Clinton case while conducting an unrelated probe.
The FBI is investigating Abedin's husband, Anthony Weiner, for allegedly sexting with a minor, and uncovered the relevant emails while seizing their devices.
