Hillary Clinton press secretary Brian Fallon said on CNN Monday hat there was "plenty of evidence" that Russian president Vladimir Putin wants Donald Trump to win the presidential election.
Host Chris Cuomo read a tweet from Donald Trump referencing the widespread belief that Russia was behind the hacking and release of emails belonging to the Democratic National Committee (DNC) because Russian leadership, including Putin, want Trump to win the election. Cuomo asked Fallon why Russia would prefer Trump as president.
"I think we need to get to the bottom of this and there's signs that the U.S. government is taking this very seriously," Fallon said. "Agencies in the government meeting last week, according to reports, to assess this threat and I think that there's plenty of evidence for why Vladimir Putin might want Donald Trump to win this election.
"You've seen Donald Trump go out and express admiration for Putin. You've seen him go out and suggest that we pull back from our commitment to our NATO allies. Just last week at the convention, he suggested that we wouldn't honor our commitment to defend some of those Baltic states that are under constant threat from Putin's Russia. So, there's plenty of reason to think that there's some kind of affinity there between Putin and Trump."
Clinton's campaign manager Robby Mook raised the point of Russia supporting Trump on Sunday as well. CNN host Jake Tapper stepped in and called it a strong accusation, but Mook insisted he was repeating what experts had said.
