Booker Responds to Clinton's Remarks About Trump Voters by Ripping Trump

March 19, 2018

Sen. Cory Booker (D., N.J.) responded by ripping President Donald Trump after he was asked on Monday about Hillary Clinton's widely criticized remarks characterizing Trump voters.

"The View" co-host Meghan McCain questioned Booker about Clinton's remarks–made at the India Today Conclave in Mumbai, India–where she said Trump voters were looking "backwards" and bragged about winning the more "prosperous" places where "two-thirds of the gross domestic product" is produced.

"First of all, the election's over and it's past, and I know that Donald Trump in every other sentence is talking about Obama and Secretary Clinton," Booker said before shifting to call for a message of unity.

"While Donald Trump seems to be intent on separating, dividing, demeaning, degrading, I want Republicans and Democrats to start a new national narrative about how we need each other," Booker added.

When McCain attempted to turn the conversation back to Clinton's remarks and whether they were hurting the Democratic Party, Booker acquiesced that Clinton was "not the President of the United States" and his focus was on the future. He continued, however, to avoid commenting on the impact of Clinton's remarks.

Some Democrats in the past week have been more willing to denounce Clinton's comments, calling them "not helpful" and saying the former secretary of state was wrong.

Booker also continued to be coy over whether he would run in the 2020 presidential election. He instead said he was focused on running for reelection to the Senate this year.
