The U.S. Navy on Saturday commissioned its newest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), with President Donald Trump in attendance.

The carrier is the lead ship of the new Ford Class, whose carriers are designed with the ability to have upgraded equipment and technologies installed easier in the future. They will also have a greater capability for flight operations.

With Trump's helicopter sitting on the flight deck while the ship was at port in Norfolk, Va., Trump spoke to the crowd.

"Wherever this vessel cuts through the horizon, our allies will rest easy and our enemies will shake with fear because everyone will know that America is coming and America is coming strong," Trump said.

"This ship is the deterrent that keeps us from having to fight in the first place," Trump said. "But this ship also ensures that if a fight does come, it will always end the same way. We will win … we will never lose."

Toward the end of the ceremony, Susan Ford Bales, daughter of the ship's namesake, former President Gerald R. Ford, gave the ship's crew her order.

"Officers and crew of the United States Gerald R. Ford, man our ship and bring her to life!" Ford Bales ordered as crew members then ran aboard the ship past the crowds in attendance and assumed their posts.

Also in attendance were Secretary of Defense James Mattis, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson, and Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
