Several prominent donors to the Democratic Party said they will put on hold about $90 million in donations should President Joe Biden refuse to step down as the party’s nominee, the New York Times reported on Friday.
The donors informed the largest Biden super PAC, Future Forward, that it will not be receiving the promised $90 million as long as Biden stays atop the ticket, two individuals familiar with the conversations told the outlet.
The threat comes amid a weeks-long crisis within the party that started with Biden’s disastrous performance on the debate stage against presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump on June 27.
Biden failed to quell voters’ concerns about his mental acuity during a high-stakes press conference Thursday evening following the NATO Summit. The octogenarian made a series of gaffes that have gone viral on social media, including introducing President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine as "President Putin" and referring to Vice President Kamala Harris as "Vice President Trump."
