Political powerhouse SEIU has launched a petition drive to pressure Media Matters into unionization, according to the Washington Examiner.
Media Matters, a liberal organization headed by Hillary Clinton attack dog David Brock, is fighting to prevent a local SEIU from representing its workers. The union posted a petition on liberal giant MoveOn.org to send a message to the liberal non-profit to "walk the walk."
"Even though Media Matters advocates for card check and other pro-union policies, they have fought tooth and nail against a union in their own office. It's time for them to stop their hypocritical opposition and start respecting their own principles," the petition reads. "It hurts the legitimacy of the progressive movement when organizations like Media Matters ‘talk the talk’ but don't ‘walk the walk.’"
SEIU is hoping to attract 200 supporters from the MoveOn.org petition and deliver it to Media Matters vice president Angelo Carusone and president Bradley Beychok.
The union claimed that it obtained support from a majority of staffers through a card check campaign, but Brock refused to acknowledge the campaign and instead petitioned for a secret ballot election.
"Media Matters publicly claims that unions ‘increase productivity,’ ‘reduce inequality,’ and ‘deliver positive benefits for the broader economy,’ but then oppose a union when their own employees want one," the petition says. "Media Matters executives are damaging the progressive movement and they need to stop."
More than 150 people had signed the petition as of Monday afternoon.
