Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski acknowledged it was "pretty ridiculous" Monday that the IRS had claimed to have lost emails to and from Lois Lerner as part of the targeting controversy plaguing the agency since last year.
"The IRS seems to have a major problem," she said.
According to the IRS, Lerner's computer "crashed." Lerner headed the division that processed applications for tax-exempt status and targeted conservative groups for special scrutiny. The agency claimed it could not locate her emails prior to 2011, drawing scorn and disbelief.
MSNBC co-host Joe Scarborough twirled his laptop in mockery, saying even if the computer was smashed to pieces the emails within would miraculously remain intact.
"Mika, even you have to admit...how ridiculous is it?" he asked.
"Pretty ridiculous," Brzezinski said. "The emails are out there."
"I'm just saying it is ridiculous that the Internal Revenue Service, who will shake down people for a receipt 18 years old, are saying they can't find emails from the person that's at the center of a scandal involving the Internal Revenue Service," Scarborough said. "I think taxpayers across America think this is absolutely preposterous."
