Washington Free Beacon contributing editor Daniel Halper said on Monday that in theory, good economic poll numbers bode well for Republicans heading into the 2018 midterm elections.
Fox News host Melissa Francis mentioned recent polling from Fox News where voters indicated they are, compared to 2016 and looking back at 2010 numbers, less worried about the economy.
"Does that bode well for Republicans in general?" Francis asked.
"In theory, yes, definitely. In 2010, of course, it was a disastrous year for President Obama. That was his first midterm election after getting elected in 2008. He lost 63 seats in the House," Halper said. "So it is expected, I should be clear, that Republicans will lose some [seats]. The question is how much will they lose."
Halper said another factor Republicans should consider is Democrats appear to be energized to go to the polls over the issue of gun control.
"I think another indicator, there's this poll which is great and it's interesting, but another indicator was this march over the weekend," Halper said of the "March for Our Lives," marches organized across the country following last month's deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
"You had not just a lot of presumably Democrats in Washington, D.C. marching against gun rights. You also had them across the nation. That suggests Democrats are very jazzed up about this election in a Republicans aren't," Halper added.
