Doug Jones Predicts 'Tug-of-War' for His Vote in the Senate

January 4, 2018

Newly sworn-in Sen. Doug Jones (D., Ala.) said on Thursday that he thinks there is going to be a "tug-of-war" in the Senate for his vote.

Jones made the comment on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," where co-host Joe Scarborough asked Jones how he plans to serve the people of Alabama and "represent their values" when many people who supported his campaign will try to pull him "about as far left as possible."

"I think the only way to be effective is to be out there, to talk to people," Jones said. "And again, we may not agree—we're not going to agree on everything. But I will listen and hear those concerns."

"I think it's going to be a tug-of-war both ways for my vote," he added.

Jones beat Republican Roy Moore in Alabama's special election last month, becoming the state's first Democratic U.S. senator in 25 years. Moore's campaign was severely damaged after several women accused him of sexual misconduct when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s.

When Jones was sworn in on Wednesday, he narrowed the Republican majority in the Senate to 51-49.
