Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin's (Wis.) campaign was hit with a Federal Election Commission (FEC) inquiry over possible excess campaign contributions, Media Trackers reports.
The FEC sent the letter to Baldwin's campaign committee, Tammy Baldwin for Senate, on Aug. 16 seeking answers on the potentially prohibited contributions that total $179,701.99.
These amounts include possible excess contributions of $94,802 from individuals; $73,900 from committees; $10,000 from committees not qualified for multi-candidate status; and $999.99 from unregistered organizations.
The Midwest Values PAC, founded by Sen. Al Franken (D., Minn.), the Forward Together PAC, where Sen. Mark Warner (D., Va.) acts as honorary chairman, and M-PAC, which is affiliated with Sen. Patty Murray (D., Wash.), were among the committees listed as giving excess contributions.
"Adequate responses must be received by the Commission on or before the due date noted above to be taken into consideration in determining whether audit action will be initiated," the FEC writes. "Failure to comply with the provisions of the Act may also result in an enforcement action against the committee. Any response submitted by your committee will be placed on the public record and will be considered by the Commission prior to taking enforcement action. Requests for extensions of time in which to respond will not be considered."
Baldwin's campaign has until Sept. 20 to respond to the FEC's letter.
