An MSNBC senior political analyst argued Monday that a number of Americans are convinced President Donald Trump will be impeached after he spent time with "Hollywood people" who want to know when, not if, the president will be forced out of office.
Mark Halperin and "Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough were discussing the prevalence of impeachment talk when Scarborough strongly questioned the possibility of impeachment. The host referred to recent impeachment talk on Twitter, and the discussion turned to whether those tweeting about impeachment are out of touch with the rest of the country.
"Hope springs eternal on Twitter, right?" Scarborough asked.
"That's what it's there for," Halperin replied.
"I have been, I think it’s safe to say, very negative about the president on Twitter, and other people have been very negative," Scarborough said. "But this weekend, there seemed to be a turn where a lot of people who were negative have started to talk about impeachment, and have started to talk about maybe he's going to resign now."
"But he's not going anywhere, Mark — is he?" Scarborough asked. "Where is this coming from?"
"Because there's no sign they're doing anything on offense, it's easy for the very large percentage of the country – tens of millions of Americans – who would like him to go, to think that's what's happening," Halperin said.
"I spent three days in Hollywood talking to Hollywood people. They all just want to know when he's leaving; it's not if," Halperin added. "They just want to know what's the date that he's out of office."
"You went to the heart of America," Scarborough facetiously told Halperin.
"I put my finger on the pulse on an important segment," Halperin quipped. "They're kind of the extreme case, 3,000 miles away. They simply want to know when he's leaving."
"He's not going anywhere until Bob Mueller says he's going somewhere," Scarborough said.
Rep. Brad Sherman (D., Calif.) represents a portion of Los Angeles County and has introduced articles of impeachment in the House. Rep. Maxine Waters (D., Calif.) has called for impeachment continually for months, and she said in August that it might happen by December.
