MSNBC guest and Vanity Fair correspondent William Cohan had a strangely dramatic reaction to a typical greeting ceremony between heads of state on Thursday, saying, "Lord help us" after watching Presidents Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron shake hands in Paris.
Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were greeted by Macron and French First Lady Brigitte Macron, and the foursome posed for photographs and appeared to exchange pleasantries. Trump is in Paris on Macron's invitation for France's Bastille Day celebrations.
After MSNBC aired the footage without commentary, host Stephanie Ruhle asked Cohan for his reaction.
"Lord help us," he almost whispered. "I mean, no. I mean, look. That was a nice ceremony. I hope that they can find common ground. I just think it's very difficult between these two men. I don't see how they have much in common."
The two men diverge on issues like climate change and multilateralism, and the media had a field day when they shared a white-knuckle handshake in May at the NATO summit.
