A majority of Americans have doubts about the word of President Donald Trump and former FBI Director James Comey on matters concerning the federal Russia investigation.
A new ABC News / Washington Post poll states 72 percent of Americans have some or no trust in Trump on the investigation, while 55 percent say the same for Comey. The two men inspire a great deal or good amount of trust from 21 and 36 percent of Americans, respectively.
Comey will testify Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee in his first public remarks since Trump fired him last month. Since then, reports have emerged that Trump privately urged Comey to let go of probes into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, and Comey is expected to discuss those conversations at Thursday's hearing.
The poll found 61 percent felt Trump fired Comey to protect himself, while 27 percent responded he did so "for the good of the country." Also, 56 percent said Trump is trying to interfere in the investigations, while 34 percent felt he is cooperating.
