Harrington: 'Makes Sense' for Trump to Hire Outside Counsel

Washington Free Beacon reporter Elizabeth Harrington said Wednesday on Fox Business that President Donald Trump made the right call to retain lawyer Marc Kasowitz as outside counsel to consult on matters related to the investigations into links between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Host Neil Cavuto asked Harrington and the rest of his panel about Trump's decision to retain Kasowitz as outside counsel in the Russia probe. Kasowitz has known Trump for decades and represented him in numerous legal battles over the years. Cavuto asked Harrington if she believed the retention of Kasowitz signaled the start of a "real battle."

"I think it has been a real battle from the beginning against Democrats and the media, who are attacking Trump for nearly everything he does," Harrington said.

"And I think it makes sense for Trump to bring in a trusted ally," she continued. "This lawyer has been with him over a decade and handled a lot of legal battles, which Trump has been accustomed to in his career. So I think it makes sense for him to bring in someone he can trust and an ally, because this investigation is going to continue. Leaks are going to continue, and Trump needs someone there to help him push back on that."

Later in the interview, Cavuto asked Harrington whether Trump would be well-advised to speak only to Kasowitz about Russia-related matters. Harrington pointed out that the real problem was not a lack of discretion on Trump's part, but the leaks from inside the government in the last several weeks.

"I think he [Trump] would be well-advised to find some of the leakers from in his own administration," Harrington added.

"It is insane," she continued. "You have all of these leaks."

"What was the fear with the Russia meddling in the first place?" Harrington asked. "It was that they're undermining our democracy by interfering. What is more undermining to our democracy when you have unelected bureaucrats on a daily basis leaking classified information selectively, which seems on the sole basis to undermine the president who they work for?"

"I think that's a real scandal we're talking about here," she said. "And I think Trump would be well-advised to get that under control first."
