Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D., Ill.) could not answer a question on Tuesday as to why there should be widespread fear that all illegal immigrants would be deported.
Gutiérrez was speaking with Neil Cavuto of Fox News about President Donald Trump's address to Congress on Tuesday evening and immigration reform.
Gutiérrez said that Trump had set up a course of massive deportation, although it couldn't happen. Cavuto confronted Gutiérrez on this point.
"But Congressman, he's not talked about rounding up 11 million people," Cavuto said. "So why are you scaring people like that?"
Gutiérrez replied that that was the fear that currently exists.
"You have to admit it's misplaced fear," Cavuto said. "He never said that."
"Neil, it is the consequence of his words and his actions that I am responding to," Gutiérrez said.
The Trump administration has said that the priority for deportation will be illegal immigrants who have committed a crime in the United States. Many Congressional Democrats are inviting illegal immigrants to be their guests during Trump's speech to Congress in the U.S. Capitol.
