Even though Hillary Clinton says she does not pay attention to polls, her campaign team is starting to feel pressure from the most recent national polls showing an almost dead heat with Donald Trump, CBS correspondent Nancy Cordes reported Monday.
She discussed the loss of the comfortable double-digit lead that the Clinton camp once had over Trump.
CBS This Morning co-host Gayle King prefaced the comments by citing the 11-point lead Clinton had over Trump in April among registered voters.
"New polls show that the race for the White House has dramatically tightened," King said on Monday. "In March and April, Hillary Clinton had a big lead in a head-to-head match-up with Donald Trump. That advantage has evaporated. She leads by just three points in one poll and is losing to Donald Trump in another. Nearly half of the voters say they want to consider a third-party option in November."
Cordes then touched on the feelings of the Democratic frontrunner's campaign after this poll was released.
"Well, Clinton says she doesn't pay attention to the polls, but clearly her campaign is feeling some pressure to begin focusing on her general election candidate, as she and her husband unveiled some new attacks on Trump," Cordes said.
This was previewed by Bill Clinton at a campaign rally in California. He put a new spin on Trump's campaign slogan, "Make America Great Again."
"Make America great again really means ... 'Hey, I'll make it the way it used to be,'" he said. "'You will be better off, and if you're not, at least you'll have somebody else to look down on.' That is a dumb idea. It will not work."
Cordes continued the report with Hillary Clinton touching on the key strategy.
"My campaign is not going to let Donald Trump try to normalize himself," she said.
