The View’s Whoopi Goldberg apologized on-air Thursday after suggesting Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and Elon Musk want to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump by tripping him downstairs.
"Hey, you know who: stay away from the stairways," Goldberg said to laughter. "Because people put their leg out to trip people down the stairs."
After a commercial break, the co-host blamed her cat while clarifying her comment.
"Okay, I need to clean something up," Goldberg said. "My cat lays in wait for me on my stairs all the time, and that’s what I was referring to. I wasn’t trying to indicate that [Musk and Vance] were actually standing there with their legs out hoping [Trump] would trip."
"The thing about this show: There is no way not to step in poo," she added.
Sunny Hostin also said, "No one wants anything done to the president."
The View co-hosts had been discussing Musk’s influence in government. The billionaire on Wednesday railed against a proposed continuing resolution bill that would prevent a government shutdown this weekend. Trump voiced his opposition soon after, and House Republicans scrapped the bill.
"Who is in charge?" Goldberg said. "I think Elon Musk believes he’s president."
"Well, you’ve been calling him vice president," Joy Behar said.
"I’ve called him vice president. I called him president because I don’t know what J.D. is doing," Goldberg said.
"He’s planning the presidency when they get rid of Trump," Behar said.
Hostin read at least six legal notes about Trump’s nominees in November, including several clarifications about sexual assault allegations against secretary of defense nominee Pete Hegseth and former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R., Fla.). ABC News, which airs The View, agreed on Saturday to donate $15 million to Trump’s future presidential library to settle a lawsuit over anchor George Stephanopoulos falsely stating that Trump was found "liable for rape."
