A new iPhone feature intended to slow down climate change is slowing down the phones' charging speed, the technology site PiunikaWeb reported Monday.
Apple has automatically turned on the feature, "Clean Energy Charging," for any iPhone in the United States that runs operating system 16.1 or higher. According to Apple, Clean Energy Charging "will try to reduce your carbon footprint by selectively charging when lower carbon emission electricity is available."
The feature "won't charge your battery" as quickly "if Apple thinks the grid isn't using enough solar," attorney Ted Frank wrote.
Apple's commitment to combating climate change only extends so far. CEO Tim Cook has repeatedly fawned over China, the world's top emitter of carbon, while his company censors apps that may offend Chinese leaders and shares user data with the Communist government.
The company has long avoided criticizing Beijing's abysmal human rights record while pushing social justice causes in the United States, the Washington Free Beacon has reported.
Apple has not instituted Clean Energy Charging in China or any country other than the United States.
Users can turn off Clean Energy Charging by going to Settings, clicking the Battery tab, and looking under "Battery Health & Charging." There, they will see a toggle for Clean Energy Charging.
Even after the user toggles off the feature, however, a pop-up window makes him or her confirm the decision, noting that "Clean Energy Charging helps reduce carbon footprint."
"Apple hasn't yet acknowledged" the charging issue, PiunikaWeb noted.
