Sen. Tom Carper (D., Del.) said Monday the "fundamentals for the economy are actually quite good," in an interview with CNN's Soledad O'Brien.
O’BRIEN: In a nutshell, what's the president going to try to do to fix that jobs number? 68,000 jobs, it's very weak.
CARPER: I think there are really four things we ought to do. One is not walk ourselves into recession--our hair is not on fire, let's keep that in mind. The underlying fundamentals for the economy are actually quite good. we need to keep that in mind. We're doing in the Congress a whole series of things to help stimulate the economy. There are about three, four or five of them pending now, the comprehensive transportation bill--2 to 3 million jobs flow from that. Go ahead and pass postal reform--we've done it in the Senate, they need to do it in the House--7 million or 8 million jobs flow from that. FDA reform legislation--it's a variety of things. I call it hitting singles and we need to continue to hit a bunch of singles, create a more nurturing environment for job creation, set the stage for hitting a home run. A home run is what we need to do after the election.
