Virginia voters decided in yesterday’s Democratic primary that state Sen. Ralph Northam will be the party’s candidate for lieutenant governor.

Northam's voting record on business issues could become a major problem for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe.

The National Federation of Independent Business gave Northam a failing grade of 55 percent based on his voting record on key legislation for small businesses.

Only three senators in the forty member legislative body received a lower grade than Northam.

Northam also faces issues when it comes to another one of McAuliffe’s key issues, transportation.

In the three years that Northam was appointed to the Hampton Roads Transit Governing Board, he only attended one out of 29 meetings that have occurred.

The state senator even had to apologize during a recent primary debate for being completely unfamiliar with issues regarding Interstate 66, one of the state's largest highways.

Northam apologized for not doing his research, and stated that he "would need to do more homework" on the issue.

McAuliffe has also run into trouble regarding transportation issues.

He bragged that he worked with both parties on a major piece of transportation legislation, and took credit for the passage of the bill.

However, even Democratic legislators in Virginia came out to say that McAuliffe’s ad was a misleading "example of self-puffery" and should have promptly been corrected.
