Wendy Davis Won't Say Whether She Supports Impeachment of Trump

'I'm not saying it's a no'

July 23, 2019

Failed Texas gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis, who announced Monday she was running for Congress, refused to say Monday whether she would support the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

Davis appeared on MSNBC's All In, where she was asked by fill-in host Joy Reid whether she would cast her vote in support of impeaching Trump if she became a member of Congress.

"If an impeachment vote comes my way, I think the people are going to vote really in November of 2020 in that regard, and I'm anxious to hear exactly what [Robert] Mueller says on Wednesday," Davis said.

"So that's a no," Reid responded.

Davis pushed back and said her answer was not ruling out support for impeachment.

"I'm not saying it's a no at all. I'm saying just like the rest of the American people, I'm anxious to hear what he has to say tomorrow, and I hope as I go forward in the campaign people will go to my website, wendydavisforcongress.com, and discover more about what those positions are," Davis said.

Davis, who is seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Rep. Chip Roy (R., Texas) in Texas's 21st Congressional District, has been an outspoken critic of Trump on Twitter dating back to 2016 when he was a presidential candidate. Last October, Davis said Trump and his Republican defenders needed to be be voted "out of political existence."

Davis rose to prominence as a Texas state senator in 2013, following an ultimately unsuccessful filibuster of a pro-life bill. She ran for Texas governor in 2014 and was crushed by Republican Greg Abbott, losing by more than 20 points.
