Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D., Wis.) released a statement on Thursday that she would oppose Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court.

"The President vowed to appoint judges to the Supreme Court who would overturn Roe v. Wade, and I cannot support a nominee for a lifetime appointment who would turn back the clock on a woman’s constitutional right and freedom to make her own health care choices, including access to birth control," Baldwin's statement said.

Kavanaugh, 53, was considered more of an establishment candidate. He clerked for Justice Anthony Kennedy, whom he will replace if confirmed, and graduated from Yale Law School. He has strong ties to the Bush family and worked as a lawyer for Whitewater Independent Counsel Ken Starr during Bill Clinton's presidency. Since 2006, Kavanaugh has been a judge on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Baldwin also added that she believes Kavanaugh would rule against Obamacare.

"The stakes are too high for the American people, who do not want the Supreme Court to advance a political agenda to overturn the law of the land on health care for people with pre-existing conditions, women’s reproductive health, and the constitutional rights and freedoms of all Americans," Baldwin said.

Baldwin then claimed that Kavanaugh would work for special interests in Washington instead of for Americans and her constituents in Wisconsin.

"After reviewing this nominee’s record, I know why powerful special interests in Washington selected Judge Brett Kavanaugh to work on the Supreme Court for them, not the people of Wisconsin," Baldwin said.

Baldwin voted against President Donald Trump's first Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, who was confirmed to the bench last year.

Several Senate Democrats, all who are from states that Trump won in 2016, are under pressure to break with majority in their party and vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation. Sen. Joe Manchin (D., W.V.) praised Kavanaugh for having "all the right qualities." News anchors, political pundits and legal scholars have all offered similar praise of Kavanaugh.
