Former MSNBC host Dylan Ratigan suffered a resounding defeat in Tuesday's Democratic primary for New York's 21st congressional district, getting just 12 percent of the vote.
Ratigan finished a distant second in a five-person Democratic primary, earning just 2,200 votes to winner Tedra Cobb's 10,347. Cobb outpaced the other four competitors combined with 56 percent of the overall vote.
The northern New York district is currently represented by Rep. Elise Stefanik (R.), who is seeking a third term. She was the youngest woman ever elected to Congress when she first won in 2014 at the age of 30.
Ratigan, who hosted a show on MSNBC from 2009 to 2012 and is now a commentator for the left-wing outlet The Young Turks, expressed disappointment with the lopsided defeat.
"I’ve never wanted more in my life to reform our politics and drive toward solutions," Ratigan said, according to the Press-Republican. "This was one possible way to go around doing that, but it doesn’t change my life path."
When Ratigan announced his campaign in February, he revealed he had never voted in his life and that he was running to create a more "serious" Congress.
Stefanik is favored to keep her seat as Republicans try to hold onto their House majority.
