Stelter: Clinton Campaign 'Working the Refs,' 'Trying To Send a Message' to Media

July 31, 2015

The Hillary Clinton campaign's battle against The New York Times is intended to put all journalists on notice, a CNN correspondent said Friday.

"Sometimes we call it working the refs," Reliable Sources host Brian Stelter said. "The journalists are the referees in this case."

After The Grey Lady published a story alleging a criminal investigation into Clinton’s email practices as Secretary of State, the campaign forcefully pushed back on the reporting, successfully causing a revision.

Communications director Jennifer Palmieri sent a 2,000 word letter to The New York Times blasting the paper for its "egregious" errors.

The Democratic frontrunner’s campaign has had a difficult relationship with the media for months, avoiding their questions and roping press members off at a parade. Meanwhile, Clinton is in hot water over revelations that her private email contained information from five different U.S. intelligence agencies, refuting her claim that she did not send nor receive classified material on that server.

"I think what we're seeing here is a very aggressive stance by the Clinton campaign trying to send a message they are paying close attention," Stelter said.
