MSNBC host Joe Scarborough said Tuesday that Washington is "rolling over" President Donald Trump after the collapse of the Senate Republican bill to repeal and replace Obamacare.
In a setback for Trump's legislative agenda, Sens. Mike Lee (R., Utah) and Jerry Moran (R., Kan.) announced Monday they would not support the bill being pushed by Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), leaving Republicans short of the 50 votes necessary to pass it.
"Donald Trump thought he could re-write the laws of Washington," Scarborough said. "Washington is rolling over him right now."
Scarborough said Ronald Reagan was an outsider like Trump, but Reagan brought in people who knew how to get things done.
"What have we been saying for years? Washington always wins," he said. "It's a message we took to our friends in the Obama White House in early 2009 when they thought they could do it their way ... There are customs and there are ways to get things done in Washington, D.C., that you can't ignore."
Scarborough read from a scathing Wall Street Journal editorial calling on Trump to change his overall approach.
"Mr. Trump somehow seems to believe that his outsize personality and social-media following make him larger than the presidency. He's wrong," the editorial read.
