Reporter to Clinton: Are You Treated Differently Because You're a Woman?

September 8, 2016

After Hillary Clinton broke a 278-day drought of not holding a formal press conference, a reporter chose Thursday to ask her if she is treated differently in the presidential race because of her gender.

"Secretary Clinton, you've been criticized by the RNC for your demeanor last night, that you were too serious, that you didn't smile enough," the reporter asked. "Can you react to that? And also you've suggested that there is a double standard. Do you think that you're treated differently in this race because you're a woman?"

"I'm going to let all of you ponder that last question," Clinton said.

Even though Clinton did not answer the gender question, she did say that people will be writing about this for years to come. She continued with her reaction to being criticized about her seemingly unfriendly demeanor.

"I had a very short window of time in that event last night to convey the seriousness [with] which I would approach the issues that concern our country," she said.

Clinton compared her time during the forum with that of Donald Trump's, saying that he spent his time complimenting Russian president Vladimir Putin and did it with more of a smile than she did when speaking.

"Donald Trump chose to talk about his deep admiration and support for Vladimir Putin," she said. "Maybe he did it with a smile and I guess the RNC would have liked that."
