NBC to Kaine: Didn't Trump Come Out on Top With Mexican Visit While Clinton Was 'Scooping Up Money?'

September 1, 2016

NBC's Savannah Guthrie asked Democratic vice-presidential pick Sen. Tim Kaine (D., Va.) Thursday whether Donald Trump came out on top in the past week after meeting the Mexican president while Hillary Clinton spent much of the week "scooping up money in the Hamptons."

Clinton just came off a celebrity-stuffed fundraising swing on the East and West coasts where she collected more than $30 million.

"If you look at the side-by-side of this week, Donald Trump went to Mexico," Guthrie said. "He sat down. He had a dignified meeting with a foreign leader. Hillary Clinton has spent most of this week scooping up money in the Hamptons for fundraisers. Doesn't Trump come out on top on that?"

Kaine disagreed, saying Trump had "choked" during his meeting with President Nieto by acknowledging he hadn't brought up payment for the southern border wall he's promised to build.

"I don't think so," Kaine said. "Just do the contrast, the 24 hours of yesterday. Donald Trump choked on the fundamental promise that he's making in this campaign, when he had the opportunity to talk to the foreign leader about it. By his words, he didn't bring it up."

A Nieto aide reportedly said payment for the wall did come up during conversations with Trump, in that Nieto said Mexico would not pay for it.
