Holder Admits He Fell Asleep While Watching 'Black Panther'

February 27, 2018

Former Attorney General Eric Holder admitted Tuesday he fell asleep while watching the new superhero film Black Panther, although he said he liked what he saw and would rewatch it at some point.

Washington Post columnist Jonathan Capehart asked Holder if he was "more T'Challa or Killmonger," the names of the movie's protagonist and antagonist.

Holder paused for a beat and then asked, "What?"

"Don't even try—you know you've seen Black Panther," Capehart said, laughing.

"Oh, OK. I just saw it two nights ago, and it seemed like a great movie, but I have to tell you, I had just come back from a long trip," Holder said. "I fell asleep in the movie."

The crowd chuckled and gasped, and Capehart said, "Whaaat?!"

"I'm going back, I'm going back," Holder said. "The parts that I saw, I really liked."

"You're not answering my question," Capehart said.

"I want to give you a truthful answer, so we're going to have to come back after I've had a chance to really check it totally out," Holder said.

Capehart jokingly stared at him before going, "Come on, man."

Black Panther opened to critical acclaim and is on pace to be one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, taking in a whopping $404 million domestically in its first 10 days. Part of the Marvel Cinematic universe, it tells the story of the Wakanda king T'Challa, played by Chadwick Boseman.

With a nearly all-black cast, the movie has also received praise for its positive representation of black and African culture.
