The Democratic National Committee gave inadequate due process when it replaced two male delegates with women "in the name of gender balance," according to a formal complaint.

Twenty-one Democrats from Vermont filed the complaint with the DNC credentials committee on behalf of the two delegates who lost their spot, saying the delegates were elected by the public just over a month ago.

The complaint "says the national party this month ordered the state party to replace Vermont Sen. Tim Ashe and party stalwart Ken Dean although Dean and Ashe were elected June 11," the Associated Press reported on Thursday.

The two males were replaced by female counterparts, all of whom "support Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) over presumptive presidential nominee Hillary Clinton," the AP noted.

The executive director for the Vermont Democratic Party said that they were "trying to follow national party requirements."

Clinton has made a point of touting her vision of equality for women on the campaign trail.
