While discussing the country’s national debt on “Morning Joe” Monday, Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R., Tenn.) rebuffed host Joe Scarborough’s notion that “nobody cares about the debt” enough to press lawmakers to balance the budget and avoid a crash.
“I would have agreed with that as recently as three years ago,” Blackburn said. “Today, the debt is kitchen table conversation. I will meet somebody and they will say, ‘Have you seen that debt clock?’ And moms, businesswomen, women who are — I think they’re more concerned about the debt than anybody else because they look at this as being a way to cap and trade their children’s future to the people that own that debt. They’re very uncertain about it.”
