Convention Chair Chides Bernie Supporters: 'Be Respectful'

July 25, 2016

Rep. Marcia Fudge (D., Ohio), the chairwoman of the Democratic National Convention, asked supporters of erstwhile presidential candidate Bernie Sanders to "be respectful" after they booed speakers who mentioned Hillary Clinton's name.

Sanders supporters have been not been shy about voicing their displeasure with the convention proceedings. Boos have echoed through the convention hall at the mention Clinton's name. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D., Fla.), the unpopular chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, was booed off the stage while speaking to the Florida delegation on Monday morning.

Fudge stopped her speech to urge respect when Sanders supporters became too rowdy.

"Excuse me," Fudge said, trying to raise her voice above the crowd.

"I intend to be fair, I want to hear the varying opinions here," Fudge said. "I intend to be respectful of you, and I want you to be respectful of me. We're all Democrats, and we need to act like it."

The Clinton email scandal and the release of internal DNC emails favoring Clinton have fueled the protest against the convention by Sanders supporters.
