All schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District were closed Tuesday after the district received a "credible terror threat."

School district officials and law enforcement confirmed the threat, KTLA reported.

Police told the Los Angeles Times that a bomb threat was called into a member of the school board. Schools were immediately closed and students and staff were instructed to stay away from all campuses that belong to the district Tuesday morning.

Law enforcement officials are conducting a search operation of all schools in the district following the threat, which was received less than two weeks after a pair of attackers opened fire on a San Bernardino, California, holiday party and killed 14 people.

Superintendent Ramon Cortines told reporters at a press conference Tuesday morning regarding the threat that his decision to close all schools in the district was influenced by the San Bernardino terror attack and national concerns about terrorism.

"I’m not going to take the chance with the life of a student," Cortines stated, calling the threat "rare."

Cortines also described the threat as "electronic" and explained that it was "conveyed not to one school, but many schools in the district. Details talked about backpacks, other packages."

The school district serves more than 655,000 students, making it the second-largest district in the country, according to CBS News.

New York City officials said Tuesday that they received the same threat as the Los Angeles school district but decided it was a hoax.
