Walmart announced today that it will no longer sell the popular AR-15 rifle and similar firearms.

The company said the decision was solely based on sluggish sales of the semi-automatic rifle.

"This is done solely on what customer demand was," Walmart spokesperson Kory Lundberg told Reuters. "We are instead focusing on hunting and sportsman firearms."

The decision affects all rifles within what Walmart labels "modern sporting rifles."

The retailer sells modern sporting rifles in fewer than a third of its more than 4,500 stores.
