The hoverboard everyone has been waiting for since the premiere of Back to the Future II is finally here.
Thanks to Lexus, a true hoverboard is now reality. The board is magnetic and can only run on magnetic rails, but it works. It contains superconducting material that has to be kept at -197 degrees Fahrenheit in order to properly hover.
"The magnetic field from the track is effectively ‘frozen’ into the superconductors in the board, maintaining the distance between the board and the track – essentially keeping the board hovering," Oliver de Haas, CEO of evico GmbH which helped develop the hoverboard, told Forbes. "This force is strong enough to allow the rider to stand and even jump on the board."
