Rep. Maxine Waters (D., Calif.) said Thursday she could "guarantee" President Donald Trump is in collusion with the Kremlin "to undermine our democracy."
The longtime congresswoman has become a progressive darling in 2017 thanks to her constant calls to "connect the dots" in the Russia investigation and desire to see Trump impeached.
During a civil rights town hall put on by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Waters encouraged the attending groups to stand up to racial intimidation and to take stronger action against the Trump administration. She argued that impeachment is more than possible, and Congress simply needs to decide to pursue it.
"How many of you in your organizations have said 'Impeach 45?'" she asked, mocking the fretting groups might do about whether it was taboo to discuss that subject. "'Well, they don't have what it takes. They don't have the laws yet," she said expressing possible reasons people give for not pursuing impeachment. "Impeachment is about whatever the Congress says it is. There is no law that dictates impeachment."
Bill Clinton got impeached "because he lied," Waters said.
"Here you have a president who I can tell you and guarantee you is in collusion with the Russians to undermine our democracy," Waters said. "Here you have a president who has obstructed justice, and here you have a president that lies every day."
She said "thank God" special counsel Robert Mueller was beginning to "connect the dots" in his wide-ranging investigation of Russian interference in the election, Trump business interests, and whether members of the Trump campaign colluded with Kremlin efforts.
"When is the black community going to say, 'Yeah, impeach him?' It's time to go after him," Waters said.
