President Donald Trump quipped that shooting survivor and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R., La.) picked a "hell of a way to lose weight" during remarks celebrating the passage of the sweeping Republican tax overhaul on Wednesday.
Speaking at the White House, Trump saluted various Republicans who helped make the tax reform bill possible.
"Steve Scalise, he's braver than all of us," Trump said, as the onlookers cheered.
Scalise was gravely wounded in the mass shooting by a far-left fanatic at a Republican baseball practice in June. A bullet shattered his femur and did serious damage to his hip and pelvis.
"He had a rougher year than most of us, but it's a hell of a way to lose weight, Steve," Trump said. "Not a good way. We love you, Steve. Great job."
CNN's Chris Cillizza noted the weight-loss joke was one Scalise had himself made in private.
