Steyer Criticizes GOP Budget, Suggests Military, Police Aren't Americans

August 15, 2018

Left-wing billionaire Tom Steyer made at an appearance at the Iowa State Fair on Tuesday where he suggested members of the military and law enforcement officials aren't real Americans.

Steyer said he would support repealing the Republican tax overhaul passed last year, which slashed corporate and individual rates. Steyer said more than "90 percent" of the benefits went to the rich and corporations, calling the tax plan a "one-two punch" that would result in funding cuts for needed programs.

Every program in the budget "that ends with an American" would get cut, he said. He separately referred to groups like the military and police getting a boost from the GOP budget, calling them programs "with a man holding a gun."

"Every single program in our budget that ends with an American is going to get cut," he said. "So that means education and training and retirement and health care. This is their excuse. We get 10 percent of the benefit, but we will pay 100 percent of the cost of that tax plan."

"And if you go through the budget—look, I was in the private sector. I love looking at numbers. I'm truly boring," he added. "But if you go through that budget, which I did, every single program that ends with a person is cut, and every single program that ends with a man holding a gun is up 30 percent. That's the military, it's ICE, it's the police, it's the prison system. And that is not how America is going to prosper."

Steyer, who has spent millions trying to elect Democrats and impeach President Donald Trump, spoke at the Des Moines Register Political Soapbox amid speculation he's running for president in 2020.

"Let me say this: Impeachment, we take very seriously. We are not trying to impeach this president because we disagree with his tax policy," Steyer said.

He told reporters in Iowa he won't decide whether to run for president until after the 2018 midterms.
