Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) unveiled this week the new slogan "Make America Sick Again" to fight back against Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare.
Schumer previewed the slogan during an interview with Politico published Wednesday before using it at a press conference the same day.
"Less health care and it will cost more," Schumer told Politico, describing the Republican plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act. "And it will create chaos. Because you cannot repeal a plan and put nothing in its place. It doesn't matter if you say the repeal won't take place for year or two years."
Schumer then unleashed his new slogan during a press conference on Capitol Hill with other Democratic lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.). Congressional Democrats met with President Obama on Wednesday morning to discuss ways to save Obamacare from being repealed by Republicans in Congress and President-elect Donald Trump, who will take office on Jan 20.
"So, we are here today to warn the American people that the Republican plan to cut Medicare, Medicaid, repeal the ACA [Affordable Care Act] will 'Make America Sick Again," Schumer said.
The New York senator hopes the new catchphrase, ripped off from President-elect Donald Trump's winning campaign slogan "Make America Great Again," will have an affect on the fight over Obamacare's future.
Republicans also held a press conference on Capitol Hill, arguing that the president's landmark law has severely damaged the country's health care system and led to rising premium costs.
