Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) on Monday accused House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Devin Nunes (R., Calif.) of falling to do his job and said that he needed to be replaced.
"Without further ado, Speaker Ryan should replace Chairman Nunes," Schumer said. "If Speaker Ryan wants the House to have a credible investigation, he needs to replace Chairman Nunes."
Schumer argued on the Senate floor that Nunes would rather protect President Donald Trump than objectively do his job of investigating Russia's role in meddling in the 2016 presidential race.
"Chairman Nunes is falling down on the job and seems to be more interested in protecting the president than in seeking the truth. You cannot have the person in charge of an impartial investigation be partial to one side. It's an inherent contradiction," Schumer said.
Schumer's tone on Monday has shifted from last week, when he was less forceful in his call for Nunes to step aside.
"I hope ... he either comes to his senses or maybe Speaker Ryan replaces him," Schumer said of the GOP chairman on CNN's "Situation Room."
