Perez Defends Pelosi Against Calls for Her to Step Down

June 22, 2017

Democratic National Committee chair Tom Perez defended House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) on Thursday against some Democrats who want her to step down from her leadership post.

On ABC's "The View," Perez praised Pelosi for her role in whipping Democratic votes to ensure the passage of Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Care Act.

"We're having this debate about the Affordable Care Act right now. And the person in the Congress singularly responsible for the passage of the Affordable Care Act was Nancy Pelosi," Perez said. "Thank God she was leading the House of Representatives during the passage of that."

"She has fought her entire career for fairness, for opportunity for everyone," Perez added.

Co-host Jedidiah Bila asked whether Perez thought that was one of the reasons Democrats wanted Pelosi to step down, since many people are experiencing premium rises under Obamacare.

"A lot of the reason that people sided with not voting for Hillary Clinton—people that wound up voting for Donald Trump—was because their health care premiums were going up," Bila said. "So if Nancy Pelosi is representative of that, doesn't that in some way hurt the party? Maybe people want to see from Democrats a willingness to revise a system that hasn't worked for many of them."

"What's interesting now, Jedidiah, is now that people actually know what the Affordable Care Act does for them, there's overwhelming support for it," Perez replied as he listed examples of people benefiting from the law.

"Now that people know what [the Affordable Care Act] is, they actually support it," Perez said.
