Sen. Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) chastised members of his party on Monday, saying it was "hurtful" for Democrats to question the legitimacy of Donald Trump's election.
Manchin was addressing last week's comments by Rep. John Lewis (D., Ga.), which have become a major news story before Trump's inauguration as president. Lewis said that he will not attend the inauguration this Friday because he does not view Trump as a "legitimate president."
Manchin said attempts to delegitimize Trump were dividing the country.
"So all of this discord that we see going on, between congressmen not attending, people basically saying he's not legitimate, basically then the Russians have accomplished what they tried to accomplish," Manchin said. "I just think it's wrong and it's hurtful for the United States of America."
This is not the first time Manchin has rebuked Lewis for his remarks. Manchin said last Friday on CNN that he disagreed with Lewis' comments before calling for national unity.
