Augustus Sol Invictus, the Orlando-based attorney seeking the Libertarian nomination in the race for the seat currently held by Sen. Marco Rubio (R.), lost to his opponent in Tuesday's primary election.
Invictus was defeated in the primary contest by Paul Stanton, a computer programmer and U.S. Army veteran. Stanton won with a nearly 50-point margin.
Invictus, whose names means "great unconquerable sun" in Latin, made headlines earlier this year when it was reported that he ritually sacrificed a goat.
Invictus' sacrifice was denounced by pagan groups and People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals.
The chairman of the Libertarian Party of Florida, Andrew Wyllie, resigned last October, releasing a statement accusing Invictus of supporting eugenics. The party also released a statement condemning Invictus' platform. "The [party] finds the initiation of violence through his call for civil war and state-sponsored murder abhorrent. These platform issues are diametrically opposed to the principles of the [party]."
Invictus was ejected in 2013 from the Ordo Templi Orientis, a mystical order founded by the "Great Beast 666" Aleister Crowley.
The Invictus campaign did not respond to a request for comment by press time.
