Gloria Borger on Hillary: 'People Just Can't Accept Her as Somebody Who Understands Their Problems'

CNN's Gloria Borger said on Sunday that Bernie Sanders is gaining ground on Hillary Clinton in a key battleground state because everyday Americans don't believe Clinton understands their problems.

"People just can't accept [Clinton] as somebody who understands their problems yet," Borger said on State of the Union.

Borger contrasted Bernie Sander's relatability with Hillary's lofty lifestyle. Sanders is one of the least wealthy presidential candidates, while Clinton has raked in millions in speaking fees.

"He is Bernie, he is relatable, people like him," Borger said. "If you look at the poll numbers for 'Cares about people like me' — which is so important in a presidential contest — Bernie Sanders does a lot better than Hillary Clinton."

Earlier in the segment, CNN's Jeff Zeleny said Bernie Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, could gain ground by painting Clinton as a latecomer to progressive causes.

"She is also being pulled to the left specifically on policy issues," Zeleny said. "Bernie Sanders is out there saying 'Listen, I've been a progressive and a liberal long before Hillary was on a variety of things.'"
