Gingrich: Trump and I Would Be 'Two-Pirate Ticket'

July 14, 2016

Newt Gingrich likened Donald Trump to a pirate Wednesday night on Fox News, suggesting that if he were Trump's running mate that they would be a "two-pirate ticket."

Gingrich remarked that he probably shouldn't say it but it was too much fun not to.

"In many ways, Donald Trump is like a pirate," Gingrich said. "He's outside the normal system. He gets things done. He's bold. He's actually like a figure out of a movie. In a lot of ways, my entire career has been a little bit like a pirate. I've taken on the establishment of both parties. I've been very prepared to fight in the media. One of the really hard questions he's got to weigh on the way to California is, do you really want a two-pirate ticket?"

Fox News host Sean Hannity, one of Trump's strongest advocates in the media, said they would be a "bold, transformative team."

The former Speaker of the House is on the shortlist to be Trump's vice-presidential pick. The Republican National Convention begins in four days, and Trump said he will announce his running mate on Friday. Other potential picks include New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.

Gingrich complimented Pence for his work in Indiana but remarked Pence's "style" was different from his own.

Gingrich was a Fox News contributor beginning last year but the channel severed official ties with him this week due to his status as a potential No. 2 to Trump. Nevertheless, he appeared on Hannity's show in the somewhat unusual role of analyzing himself and other potential running mates.
