Hillary Clinton's former director of policy outreach, Edward Meier, announced on Wednesday that he will be running against Republican Pete Sessions to represent the 32nd congressional district in Texas.
Meier, 40, served as a senior adviser to the deputy secretary of state under former President Barack Obama and was the director of policy outreach for Hillary for America for over a year. He also served as the executive director for the Clinton-Kaine transition team from August 2016 to December 2016.
Meier is currently the executive director for Big Thought, a non-profit that provides learning opportunities to children in the Texas community. His campaign website said he is "Standing up to Trump on behalf of families in Texas' 32nd congressional district."
The former Clinton adviser spoke with the Dallas Morning News regarding his congressional campaign.
"I'm running for Congress because folks in Dallas deserve a representative who looks out for their needs, not a rubber stamp for Donald Trump," Meier said. "I'll focus on what families here in Dallas need–better-paying jobs where people are treated with dignity, more affordable health care that they can count on, and making sure all of our kids are ready to compete in a changing economy."
Meier hopes to be a change from Sessions, who he claims stands with President Donald Trump "100 percent of the time."
With the Texas Democratic primary in March 2018, Meier only has one challenger for the 32nd congressional district so far.
