A member of the Democratic National Committee was upset during a meeting as he recounted members of his union being arrested for being illegal immigrants.
At the DNC's summer meeting in Chicago, a resolution was brought up "opposing the cruel immigration policies of the Trump administration."
"I'd like to use this opportunity to tell you what happened in my own union just a few weeks ago. My union represents workers in a meatpacking plant in Salem, Ohio," the DNC member said. "One day our members went to work processing bacon as they do every day and ICE showed up with semiautomatic weapons, with guns pointed at peoples' faces, with a helicopter hovering overhead and 146 people were detained. 80 of them are still in detention, some of them were detained for the crime of not bringing their papers to work that day."
"That is not what I want to see America be like. Families were separated, children were left alone, and ICE was so proud of what they did that they posted on their own website video of their agents loading their weapons before they went into the plant," the member said. "So this is a resolution I support wholeheartedly."
The facility that the member was referring to, Fresh Mark, had multiple other locations simultaneously visited by ICE as part of a program intended to target employers of illegal immigrants.
Many members of the Democratic party have called for the abolition of ICE as an agency or for it to be completely restructured and not focus on illegal immigrants in the United States.
